MSc in Sports Industry Management visited the Olympique Lyonnais!

Read the Interview of Jeremy D. about his visit of the Olympique Lyonnais part of the MSc in Sports Industry Management.

Who did you meet?

During our visit of the Olympique Lyonnais, we met with Mr Didier Kermarrec (Business Development Manager of the Olympique Lyonnais) and with Nathan Constancias, from the last MSc in Sports Industry Management cohort who is currently doing his internship at the Olympique Lyonnais (in Product Management).

What impressed you the most during this visit?
Mr Kermarrec and Nathan Constancias concentrated their presentation on the future key business aspect for the club; of course the number one being, the recent inauguration of the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. This new stadium is the new face of the club but also of the region. The stadium is the newest and most technologically advanced in France. The Parc Olympique Lyonnais is not only a football stadium but a polyvalent stadium which will be a major attraction for various activities and a major economic actor in the Lyon region.

What did you learn about the Olympique Lyonnais?
The Olympique Lyonnais started to truly establish itself among top European clubs in 2000. The team won seven straight Ligue 1 titles from 2001 to 2008. They also had many good European campaigns and went to the Semi Finals in 2010. These successful years gave the club a strong notoriety. Furthermore, the Club not only concentrates on its first team but on its youth center as well. They are ranked second in Europe behind FC Barcelona in terms of youth development.
Now, the Olympique Lyonnais has just finished building its own stadium which opened in January 2016. The Parc Olympique Lyonnais is one of the key aspects for the club’s future. First, it represents a major accomplishment and second a strong reaffirmation that the Olympique Lyonnais is part of the football elite in Europe.

How was this visit related to what you are currently studying in the program?
The visit of L’Olympique Lyonnais gave us an overview on how a successful sports organisation stays ahead of everyone else. It gave us many insights on how things are ran in terms of business development and marketing strategies. The world is moving at a fast pace and therefore businesses must constantly adapt in order to meet their customers’ needs.
