MSc in Sports Industry Management: Student Profile

Hear what Kevin B. has to say about his experience of the MSc in Sports Industry Management:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself
I am 24 years old and I come from a suburb of Paris. After obtaining my scientific baccalauréat, I studied German for one year at the Institut Catholique de Paris where I also prepared for the exam to enter Sciences Po. I succeeded in this exam and thus studied 4 years at Sciences Po Lyon, where I specialised in International Affairs (International Law, economy, International relations etc...). I studied one year in Germany at the University of Konstanz, which is well-known for its programmes in sports sciences and sports management. This is why after I graduated from Sciences Po I decided to study sports management at EMLYON, which is one of the best business schools in France. Studying in a recognised business school is a strong asset as there a lot of sports management programmes in France. Furthermore since my early age I have been very passionate about sports and particularly about cycling. I used to attend international races and cycle along and against riders who are now participating in the biggest races of the world (Tour de France, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, etc...).

What were the highlights of your experience in the MSc in Sports Industry Management?
The highlight of the programme was the semester in Shanghai. For my career it was a necessity to go to China and to see what's going on in this part of the world, especially because Chinese investors are entering the world of sports marketing and sponsorship: Wanda with Wang Jianlin or Groupe Ledus with FC Sochaux-Montbeliard. It was very interesting to see how the sports market is growing and transforming itself very quickly. Also it was a unique occasion for me to discover a culture and a part of the world I didn’t know.

Where are you currently interning?
I am currently finishing my internship at Infront Sports & Media, a Swiss company owned by Mr Wang Jianlin and specialised in sports marketing and sponsorship. We help clubs and federations develop themselves through sponsorships and consulting actions. We are also strongly involved in the organisation of the 2017 Handball world championship for which will take place in France.  I found this opportunity on the Sports Strategies website. After my internship I will start a job within the marketing department of Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), a company specialised in the creation and development of international sports events. This is a very interesting and highly challenging area because the competition is strong among the actors.

What advice would you give to the future students of the MSc in Sports Industry Management?
If I had one advice for the students it would be to keep in touch with innovation and new trends. The sports industry is moving quickly from one trend to another and it is important for us to stay ahead of the competition! Another tip: be open to any opportunity, this might change the way you see your passion, because sports is and must remain a world of passion! Furthermore traveling to discover new ways of doing sports is necessary.
